Reading Fluency

Reading for fun.
Book title: Al the jet

At the end of every O-G class, the tutor and child engage in a fun book reading activity. Reading fluency is stressed in this activity. The tutor will demonstrate fluent reading and the child will follow along the text with their finger.

I think this activity can be modified slightly to encourage reading comprehension. The following are some examples I thought of according to the suggestions by Neufeld (2005) Comprehension instruction in content area classes:

Getting ready to read:

A tutor can model ‘thinking-aloud’ and talk about what they knew about the book judging by the title. E.g. the book I was reading with the child here is called ‘Al The Jet’. I can say something about a jet (e.g. I know a jet is something that carries astronauts to outer space. I wonder if we will read about all the cool planets, Mars for example, in this book).

During and After reading:

Summarize the text. For example, I can summarize midway through the story by saying something like: looks like Al The Jet got a challenging mission this time. He has to land on a really far planet from Earth. He has to land on a hot planet called the Venus.

Evidence-based comment

Tier 2 Adaptations/Suggestions:

The reading time can be easily adapted to a small group reading. Children can form a small circle around the teacher for reading. One adaptation is to ensure the font in the book is large enough for all children to see.
